How Do We Construct Wood Countertops for You?
Our process starts by letting you choose the kind of wood species you want from our international and local collection of wood species. You can also decide the dimensions required for your custom wood countertop depending on where it will be installed and what it’ll be used for. If you do not know how to measure, our laser templating service is offered to help you take accurate measurements.
After we take down the correct measurements, you get to choose the suitable construction style from the three types we offer face grain, edge grain, and end grain. Typically, grain tops consist of rectangular blocks that are cut to fit the size you need. For a more uniform look, we recommend you choose edge grain because its board width is narrower than plank style. However, if you are looking for an anti-warping top, face grain is the right option for you — the thickness of the face grain construction style ranges from 1 1/2” to 1 5/8”.
You then get to decide which top features and finishes you’d like for your custom wood countertop; our woodworkers combine all your choices and create a magnificent work of art. All customers are welcome to browse our delivery options to find the one that works best!
Face Grain
Face grain construction allows the board lay-up to be wider, but thickness is limited by wood species. Normal thickness ranges from 1 1/2” to 1 5/8”. Random sized boards are cut and used. Standard board width is 1 1/2″ to 3 1/2″ wide. Wider board width is subject to increased instability; therefore face grain construction is prone to warping. Care must be taken in condition control, finish maintenance, and top installation.
Edge Grain
Edge grain construction allows board lay-up to be thicker – up to 5”. Generally, the board width is narrower than plank style. Board widths are random sizes varying from ¾” to 1 ¾” and dependent upon wood species. Grain of this construction type tend to be straighter and more uniform than other construction styles. Often referred to as “Butcherblock”. Edge grain construction is the most stable of the 3 types available.
End Grain Wood
End grain tops are constructed with the end grain surface on top. rectangle blocks are normally cut, and boards may be random in size. Blocks are glued up in a brick laid pattern. End grain is a good choice for cutting applications. End grain is recommended on tops 3” – 5” thick. Thickness adds to the stability of the product, but this style is subject to end cracks if not properly maintained.
